Care and Maintainence of your Butcher's Block

Our Butchers Blocks are Made in Australia using the best quality Timbers, Lacquers, Waxes and Glues available.

Whilst the best available materials have been used in construction, the blocks are still prone to minor movement in the first twelve months of their life. This is usually due to timber needing to adjust to the environment it is put into - i.e. Humidity and Temperature of your home. This movement is typical of all solid timber furniture, especially Butcher Blocks with so many joints.

To minimize movement and maintain the glossy finish, attention should be paid to the following:

  • The cutting surface of the block should be re-waxed regularly. Generally this may be required once a month (depending on the amount of use) using the wax provided. This will waterproof the timber and repair any small cracks or knife marks.
  • When cleaning the Block, pleae use a damp warm cloth rather than a wet cloth. This will remove most common "household" stains. If stains persist, gently wash with warm soapy water.
  • Never use general cleaning products or abrasives such as soap pads or silicon based products.
  • The Butchers Block has expansion and contraction joints designed into its construction that will allow it to take a considerable amount of punishment under normal domestic conditions.

Particular attention to the above should be given if your home experiences severe climatic conditions. e.g. air conditioning or tropical humidity.

  • Avoid placing too close to direct heat such as an open fire or fan forced heaters.
  • Avoid placing hot objects on the surface, such as hot cups and beverages. Use coasters or heat resistant mats.
  • DO NOT Salt the block, or use a saline solution, solvents or abrasive substances to clean the cutting surface. This will only remove the build up of Carnauba Wax Finish that protects the cutting surface from moisture and contaminants.
  • DO NOT Oil the cutting curface. This is unnecessary as instead of using oil, we have waxed the timber. Oiled surfaces are inferior to the waxed finish.

If oil or water was allowed to enter the timber it would bloat the timber causing the block to crack.

The Butchers Block is not designed or guaranteed for outdoor use. Placing furniture in direct light or constant heat can cause the timber to dry out and fade, split or warp.

Wipe up spillages immediately. Ensure water from pot plants or vases is not left on the furniture. Avoid leaving such items as glasses or cups directly on the surface overnight.

Treat the Blocks with respect. Whilst incredibly strong, they do not like jarring, or heavy vibration. If moving over long distances please lift the Block rather than rolling over bumps.
